An Islamic man, with a history of mental health and drug problems, has ploughed a vehicle into crowds of people in a pedestrianised area of Mebourne. Witnesses claim he shouted “allahu akbar” during the attack and video has emerged of him shouting the same remarks as he was arrested.
The phrase meaning “god is great” is synonymous with Muslim fundamentalist attacks, however Australian authorities are keen to downplay the attack as a terrorist attack instead calling the man a “crazed individual”. This despite the hallmarks of previous terror attacks in France and Germany where vehicles where employed.
The attack has seen four killed including a man and a woman in their 30s and a young child. At least twenty five people are injured. The driver involved in the attack has been identified as 26-year-old Dimitrious Gargasoulas. Who prior to attack posted to facebook he was going to “take you dogs down”.
He was apprehended an hour after the attack, where he was shot in the arm before been arrested; he was wearing nothing but red underwear at the time of the arrest. He is now in hospital having his injuries treated.
